Do Impact Windows Actually Lower Your Insurance in Florida?

June 24, 2026 · Abner Nunez

Short answer: usually, yes. Impact-rated windows and doors are one of the few home upgrades in Florida that can pay part of themselves back through lower insurance premiums — but only if the paperwork is done right.

How the wind-mitigation credit works

Florida insurers price homeowner policies partly on how well your home resists hurricane-force wind. When you protect all your openings with impact-rated products, your home qualifies for wind-mitigation credits. After a licensed inspector documents the upgrade on the state wind-mitigation form, your carrier applies the discount.

The savings vary by home and carrier, but opening protection is typically one of the bigger line items on a mitigation report, alongside your roof.

What you need to claim it

  1. NOA-compliant products. In the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (Miami-Dade and Broward), impact windows and doors must carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance.
  2. A permit and passed inspection. The install has to be permitted and inspected — carriers will not credit unpermitted work.
  3. The wind-mitigation documentation. When we finish an impact windows and doors job, we hand you the paperwork to give your insurer.

Impact glass vs. hurricane shutters

Shutters are cheaper up front, but you have to put them up before every storm, and they do nothing for you the rest of the year. Impact glass protects the opening all the time, keeps the house quieter and cooler, adds security, and usually earns the larger insurance credit. For most homeowners staying put for more than a few years, the math favors impact.

Do it with the roof

If you are already planning a re-roof, doing the windows at the same time means one permit, one crew, and the openings only get disturbed once. Bundling is where the real savings are.
